Henna Hair Myths Debunked

Henna Hair Dye MythsWe've been creating henna hair dyes over at Morrocco Method for decades now, and we know the ins and outs of how henna works and its many benefits. So we wanted to clear up some common misconceptions about this wonderful product! First off, let's break down what henna truly is. Henna, otherwise known as Lawsonia Inermis, is a flowering plant that is used as a naturally red-orange dye when it is milled into a fine powder. When used on hair, it becomes a semi-permanent dye while conditioning hair follicles and adding shine. All of Morrocco Method's Henna Hair Dyes are 100% plant-based and chemical free. They are also free of metallic salts, ammonia and PPD! henna hair dye

Myth #1: Henna can be Brown, Black or Red

Some people are under the impression that there are different color varieties of henna. This is not true. Henna by itself is only one color: red. However, there are different color varieties of henna hair dyes, which are achieved by utilizing a second plant: Indigo Tinctoei, or Indigo for short. Indigo by itself is bluish-black in color. Producing different shades of henna hair dye, then, is simply a matter of combining both Henna and Indigo in varying amounts. The end result is entirely dependent upon the ratio of Henna to Indigo. Using more Henna than Indigo produces lighter, warmer colors; using more Indigo produces deeper, cooler colors. When using a packet of our Dark Brown Henna Hair Dye, or any other variety of brown or black shades, you are using a specific premixed combination of henna and indigo to achieve the shade specified on the package.

Henna in three colorsMyth #2: Henna can Lighten Hair

Think of Henna like layers of paint. Henna Hair Dye works by thoroughly coating the hair strand, rather than bleaching it. The end color, then, is a combination of both the Henna Hair Dye color and your hair's base color. Henna Hair Dye can only maintain or darken hair colors, it cannot lighten them. Neutral Henna Hair Dye can be used to add shine and volume to hair without adding color.

Myth #3: Neutral Henna is the Same Thing as "True" Henna

"True" Henna and Neutral Henna are not the same thing. As we explained earlier in this blog, the henna plant, Lawsonia Inermis, by itself can only be red. Neutral Henna is actually a common term for an entirely different plant, Cassia Obovata. Cassia Obovata possess many of the same conditioning effects as Lawsonia Inermis Henna, adding both shine and volume when applied to hair.  However, Neutral Henna won't impart any color to hair. Our Blonde Henna is comprised of the same Cassia Obovata plant. The blonde coloration is achieved by adding marigold flowers and chamomile tea to the mixture, creating a beautiful golden tinge. Debunking the Myths of Sulfonated Pine Shale Oil

pine-2012-12-5-PineNeedles1[1]At Morrocco Method, we care a lot about ingredients; we make sure to select only natural ingredients that benefit hair, leaving out any artificial colors or perfumes. One of our most asked about ingredients is Sodium Shale Oil Sulfonate, or Pine Shale, which is found in our eponymous Pine Shale Shampoo. Pine shale is a unique ingredient because unlike apricots or apples, which take a few weeks to ripen, pine shale takes just a little bit longer to mature.  In fact, pine shale is sourced from surplus reservoirs of rich shale oil underneath the earth's surface that form after the decomposition of large forests of ferns and evergreens millions of years ago. Pine shale is great for the hair and scalp for a number of reasons. In Europe, pine shale has been approved as an effective dandruff treatment. When applied to skin and scalp, it has been shown to be a natural and safe skin care agent, combating both itching and inflammation. In one double-blind study, pine shale was again proven to be an excellent anti-inflammatory agent and helped in the treatment of atopic eczema. Green-Forest-of-Ferns-green-19838811-1024-768[1] However, there's been a lot of mixups between sulfonated shale oil and crude shale oil, a very different ingredient. As an example, the EWG profile of Pine Shale Shampoo actually lists the wrong ingredient! MM Pine Shale actually uses PALE SULFONATED SHALE OIL, which is very, very different from the crude shale oil, a potentially harmful ingredient. We are currently working to have this rectified. There are actually several articles addressing the safeness of sulfonted shale oil, including this one. To quote:
Sulfonated shale oil, pale was found to be very well tolerated whether administered for a short period or over a long time. There were no indications for teratogenic, mutagenic or carcinogenic effects. The therapeutic range (ratio of the toxic dose in pine shale shampooanimals and the therapeutic human dose) for topical administration is > 30 depending on animal species, frequency of administration, dose-level employed and the toxicological question posed. The results of the toxicological studies coincide with the almost 70 years of experience that the drug is well-tolerated by man.
As our most restorative shampoo, Pine Shale Shampoo is a great option for anyone experiencing dandruff, itchy scalp or inflammation. And at millions of years in age, shale oil is just another example of how turning to the past can help us have a safer, healthier future.

Our Verdict on Natural Shampoo vs. No Poo

If you were to draw a timeline back to the beginning of human existence, you'd realize that modern shampoos as we know them are relatively new. Furthermore, the idea of shampooing daily is even newer, emerging only after the rise of major hair care companies in the 1970s. Much skepticism has been raised regarding whether shampooing daily is the right choice for your hair. And as a result, the 'No Poo' method of washing hair has become increasingly popular. However, a closer look reveals that this method, too, may be doing damage than good to your hair. apple cider vinegar for hair

The Concept of the 'No Poo' Method

Traditional, store-bought shampoos are filled with unnecessary and even harmful ingredients in order to produce artificial colors and smells. The most common of these ingredients in sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS). Sodium lauryl sulfate dries the scalp, causing irritation, and strips hair of its natural oil, known as sebum, which is essential for keeping hair conditioned and healthy. The 'No Poo' method seeks to remedy this problem. It involves washing with only water or a combination of baking soda and apple cider vinegar. The theory is that: without being stripped of its natural oils, the scalp will begin to better regulate its oil production, thereby breaking the dependency of daily shampooings.

Why 'No Poo' May Be Hurting Your Hair

sulfate free shampooThe method of washing with just water alone is not enough cleanse hair of its natural oils, which leads to buildup. According to Elizabeth Cunnane Phillips, a trichologist (hair and scalp expert), "A clean scalp is paramount to healthy hair." Furthermore, dermatologist Dr. Dennis Gross agrees that, "Scalp oils are actually hospitable to the growth of yeast, which can lead to inflammation." The other method of using baking soda or other domestic detergents can be even more harmful. With a pH of 9, baking soda is 100 times more basic than water, making it a known alkaline irritant. Dermatologist Dr. Audrey Kunin, M.D. asserts of hazards of using baking baking soda on hair, saying, "The first principle of shampooing:  make sure your shampoo says it is pH-balanced and avoid those that are alkaline. Alkaline shampoos strip the hair's natural oils and disrupt the acid mantle, causing dehydration and leading to porous, fragile hair."

Natural Shampoos as an Alternative

The path to healthier hair doesn't have to be as black and white as synthetic shampoos vs. 'No Poo'. Many natural shampoo brands (Like Morrocco Method's paleo-friendly, unprocessed hair care line) offer products that cleanse hair while not stripping the scalp of its natural oils. Many natural ingredients can actually replenish your hair's oils, including:
  • aloe vera for hairJojoba Oil
  • Sweet Almond Oil
  • Hemp Seed Oil
  • Sweet Orange Oil
Natural shampoos that incorporating ingredients like these can prevent oil buildup while also strengthening and benefiting the hair.

Final Verdict: Natural Shampoos are the Better Choice

The DIY 'No Poo' approach to hair care is a risky undertaking that may leave hair dried and damaged. Instead, look to natural shampoos that work with your hair, gently replenishing its natural oils from root to tip.

Shopping for Gluten Free Shampoos: Knowing Your Label

gluten free wheat"I have a gluten sensitivity. Is it vital that I use gluten-free shampoos and conditioners?"

The simple answer is: no. But as any smart consumers will know, the simple answer is not always the safest or the wisest. An increasing amount of anecdotal and scientific evidence have identified gluten in cosmetic products as the source of some pretty serious side effects.

Why Gluten Free Matters for Your Hair

Your scalp, as an extension of your skin, can be highly absorptive. This can be easily exemplified if you have ever applied cream or lotion to your skin. Up to 60% of that lotion can be absorbed through the skin and into the body over the  course of the day. Your scalp functions in much the same way. Some people with more sensitive skin types have reported rashes and skin irritations after being exposed to shampoos with gluten ingredients. Two studies (Contact Dermatitis 50.3; Contact Dermatitis 54.5) have linked cosmetic use of hydrolyzed wheat protein with the development of hives in persons with dietary allergies to the same substance, supporting the hair loss prevention, gluten freetheory that symptoms of dietary restrictions can manifest from ingredients applied topically.   Lastly, many cosmetics, especially lipsticks and shampoos, can be inadvertently ingested. More and more doctors are recommending those with Celiac or gluten insensitivity avoid cosmetics products containing gluten for this reason.

Where to Start: Deciphering Your Shampoo Label

Since shampoos are not considered food products, shampoo companies can be very liberal with gluten ingredients without much indication.  Gluten appears most frequently in styling products, such as mousse or gels, because of gluten's "glue-like" texture, which can help hold hair in place. Deciphering ingredients is the best way to identify gluten ingredients in shampoos and conditioners. Here's a list of the most popular forms of gluten:
  • Triticum vulgare (wheat)
  • Hordeum vulgare (barley)
  • Secale cereale (rye)
  • Avena sativa (oats)
  • Wheat germ oil
  • Hydrolyzed wheat protein
  • Stearyl dimonium hydroxypropy (hydrolyzed wheat protein)
  • Laurdimonium hydroxypropyl (hydrolyzed wheat protein)
  • Colloidal oatmeal
  • Dextrin palmitate (starch, possibly gluten-based)
  • Malt extract (usually barley)
  • Beta glucan (frequently derived from wheat)
  • Vegetable protein (may contain wheat, barley, rye and/or oats)
[caption id="attachment_7136" align="alignright" width="241"]chemical free shampoo, Morrocco Method's Apple Cider Vinegar Shampoos is a great gluten free option![/caption]

Choosing a Gluten Free Alternative

Over the past couple of years, food and cosmetic companies have become increasingly aware of the affects of gluten ingredients, and as a result, many gluten free alternatives have become available. When researching a cosmetic brand, always check to see if the ingredients lists are supplied online. If they are not, consider calling the company to obtain them. By taking the extra step to research ingredients list of your shampoos and conditioners, you can assume better control of the health of your hair and scalp.

The Five Pillars of Achieving Thick, Natural Hair

natural healthy hair

With the current status of our world's health we realize that we've been flooded with pollution and toxins in many forms.

Psychologically, it can be challenging to go through hair issues. The health of your hair and skin can often serve as an indicator to your body's overall health; if your hair starts shows signs of weakening, your body may be sending you a message, and its best to honor these messages instead of slipping them under the rug. We don't have to live in a cave in order to thrive in our modern world, but we do need to learn how to adapt if we want our bodies and hair to look and feel as healthy as they did when we were younger. This applies to both emotional and psychological attitude. Often, social programming makes us feel inferior and not worthy. This defuses our own power, which we can't let happen, because we are truly more than our external appearance. So, no matter what your age, if you aren't experiencing the head of hair you desire, you don't have to feel powerless. Our bodies, down to even the DNA level, can be affected by environmental factors. The study of how our environment influences our genetic functions is known as epigenetics. Such environmental factors include air quality, nutrition and stress. In my own terms, I refer to these factors as the Five Pillars, which if expressed properly, can promote better cell health. They are:
  • Cellular communication
  • Cellular environment
  • Cellular movement
  • Cellular nutrition
  • Ability to master detoxification
Zen Detox (brochure)The first step in addressing environmental factors is to get back to basics, starting with the soil of the hair: the scalp. Overtime, the environment deposits toxins in the scalp, such as synthetic chemicals, pesticides and so forth. Bentonite clay, a natural clay deposit found in mountains all over the world, is a great tool for drawing out these heavy metals and toxins. Morrocco Method's Zen Detox is a mixture of bentonite clay, along with a healthy mix of herbs and minerals, to get you started on your healthy hair journey. Along with the external, there are other factors that we cannot dismiss. Stress is a big one. How do you handle your stress load? Do you meditate and connect to your true source for power? Do you go for walks to clear your mind? Do you have a breathing practice to help slow down your bodies fight or flight response? Forms of relaxation are important because the health of our bodies (as well as our hair) are affected by internal factors like stress. For example, our adrenals and kidneys work harder when under stress. The kidneys help filter toxins, including those found in the hair, so if the body cannot process toxins efficiently, the hair becomes negatively affected. Tai Chi or Chi Gong are also excelelnt for building up muscle and respiratory strength. Body work and neuro muscular therapy have also been shown to release past stress memories stored within the tissues and muscles. herbs for hair growth Lastly, diet can be an important factor in the health of your hair. Work towards eliminating as much processed food as possible, choosing instead clean, healthy whole foods. Supplement your diet vitamin-rich Chinese tonic herbs, and learn which plants help strengthen the kidneys and hair, such as Ho Shou Wu. Ho Shou Wu is a good source of iron and antioxidants and supply vital energy to the body.

So what to remember from this article?

Get into a mind set of taking responsibility and action towards your goals and the long term result instead of the quick fix. Take life slow and realize that if you want long lasting results and truth than you need to do what it takes now to reap the rewards later. Morocco Method provides you with all the truly natural substances to nourish your scalp, roots and hair in order to regain your hair health. But along with supplying nourishment to your hair, you must also take the time to address both internal and external factors, such as diet and stress. Work on the 5 pillars daily, and take control of environmental factors that are hindering you from achieving naturally healthy hair. With patience comes acceptance of our inner beauty at a deeper level. Positive thoughts and a positive attitude will guide us to a healthier, happier future.

Lunar Hair Chart: Cutting by the Blue Moon

Lunar Hair Chart, Lunar, Lunar Hair Calendar, Hair RegrowthIt's no secret that people have been fascinated by the power of the moon since ancient civilization began. Just like the moon effects the earth's behavior, it also effects the behavior of our bodies; including our hair. Have you ever wanted to know the answer to timing your hair cuts to boost length, strength, thickness, root work, or beauty? Read about The Lunar Hair Chart below, and find out about the best time to maximize your hair cutting results, especially during the peak of the full moon.

The Lunar Hair Chart Explained

The Lunar Hair Chart is a guide to the method of cutting one's hair in conjunction with phases of the moon. Even thousands of years ago, humans were using the science of the lunar cycle to predict the changing of seasons for agricultural use. It's also been proven that the lunar cycle has major effects on the movement of tides. With our bodies being made up of nearly 80% water, it only makes sense that the moon's phases would have significant effects on our bodies, too. That's why so many believe the lunar cycle can be utilized as a powerful tool when it comes to cutting hair, especially during a full moon. As the moon's energy moves to its pinnacle of power, astrologists and followers alike believe this cycle also magnifies our body and hair's strength. That's why our Hair Shaman, Anthony Morrocco, created The Lunar Hair Chart: so that we could easily figure out when to harness the energy of the lunar cycle to increase our hair cutting results. Whether your goal is to thicken, lengthen, beautify, strengthen, or focus on root work; using The Lunar Hair Chart as a guide will allow you to pick the perfect time to magnify the outcome of your hair cutting goal.

The Power of July's Blue Moon

It's no coincidence that there's something about a full moon which makes for a particularly interesting night. When the moon is full, it symbolizes the height of power and illumination in the lunar cycle, which is why cutting hair for growth during a full moon makes for the best growth results. So, what makes this month extra special for hair cutting with The Lunar Chart? For the first time since 2012, this July will bring us a Blue Moon, which is a second full moon in the period of one calendar month. lunar, 2015, hair growth, hair cuttingWhat makes this even more beneficial, when it comes to cutting for hair growth, is that this Blue Moon occurs during the dates of the Leo,  which is the sign of the lion in the Zodiac. Just like a lion is born with a full and lush mane, Leos are known for being endowed with some of the thickest and prettiest locks in the astrological calendar.

Cutting with The Lunar Hair Chart

Want to harness the power of the lunar cycle for your best hair cut? For ideal hair growth results this July, schedule a cut during one of this month's two full moons. Always insist upon a blunt snip cut on wet hair from your stylist, or check out our tutorial for how to give yourself this type of trim at home. Though every astrological sign can benefit from cutting during the full moon for growth, Leos in particular will want to take advantage of this July's exceptional lunar power. Especially since this kind timing for the Lions of the Zodiac only comes around "every once in a blue moon." https://youtu.be/ccPWmXjKbdU

Natural Hair Care, from Brushing to Cleaning to Coloring

Reprinted from www.hookedonhealth.co

Have you fallen for the commercial hype about soft, silky, touchable hair?

gorgeous-hair-1-size-3[1]As I discussed in an earlier blog, most of them, if not all, contain plastics that coat the hair to make it seem soft and silky. However, this is only an illusion. The outside of the follicle and shaft gets coated in shiny plastic while the inside remains more damaged than ever. Using commercial shampoos or coloring products can put you at risk for toxic chemicals, including: parabens, silicone, plastics, ammonia and sodium laurel sulfate I have been doing some research and experimenting with my own head and hair, and I have a company that I want to recommend to you for everything you will need for truly healthier hair, no illusion.

Morroccomethod.com is where I go for all things natural hair care.

This company is quite thorough. Their education center hosts a vast library of videos explaining just about everything you need to know about natural hair care, from where to get started to what products work best for your specific hair type. They have products for every kind of hair, whether yours is curly, straight, gray, ethnic, thinning or just generally unhealthy. Their wide range of products match just about every hair type. The list includes natural bristle brushes to strengthen and add shine, shampoosconditioners, hair and scalp detox, hair color (which I absolutely love), styling products and pet products for dogs, cats and horses. They even have a lunar calendar telling you the best dates to cut to lengthen, beautify, strengthen, thicken and for root work. If you are lucky enough to not need any of those categories they also show dates to retard hair growth. Hair Detox Reviews, Raw Detox I particularly love the hair color because of how soft, bright and full my hair is for days after coloring, unlike chemical dyes that leave my hair delicate and brittle. Plus it is extremely safe and non-toxic, so much so that you can recolor your hair as often and as frequent as you'd like (leaving 72 hours between each coloring). You cannot lighten hair with this product but you can darken or enhance your own color. There is a slight learning curve with this hair color but customer service is always willing to answer your questions. I am nearly 100% gray, but by using henna I have gone back to being a redhead. I had previously given up on being a redhead because of how fast my chemical color faded. With henna hair dye, my color lasts so much longer with no real significant fading, and I am constantly getting compliments about my fantastic color. They regularly add new products. The latest addition is amla powder. Amla is a great conditioner used alone. When added to henna hair color, it creates cooler tones for a richer, darker color. It also helps retain curl definition and enhances dye uptake to prevent fading for longer lasting color. In addition, all of the products are vegan, raw, cruelty free, gluten free, made in the USA and contain no GMOs, soy or SLS (sodium laurel sulfate).

Did I say I love these products?

I do and I endorse the use of them for all of the reasons mentioned above. And don't worry, they work on all hair types and ethnicity, plus pets.

Apple Cider Vinegar Hair Rinse

You may have noticed that one of our main ingredients is raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar.  This is also one of our most valuable ingredients for a number of reasons.  It is said that the use of apple cider vinegar for cosmetic purposes can be traced back to the Romans!  It is in almost all of our products, but what makes apple cider vinegar so great?

Benefits of Apple Cider VinegarApple Cider Vinegar Hair Rinse

  • Stimulates scalp to promote hair growth
  • Cleanses hair without stripping natural oils
  • Removes build-up from chemical products
  • Helps hair retain moisture for better conditioning
  • Antibacterial and antifungal properties to help with flaky and itchy scalps
  • Closes the hair cuticle allowing for shine and fewer tangles

Try an Apple Cider Vinegar Hair Rinse

Apple Cider Vinegar Hair RinseOne thing we recommend during the detox period is an apple cider vinegar hair rinse in addition to the shampoo.  This helps get rid of extra build-up and oils on the hair and scalp.  We recommend doing the hair rinse once or twice a week during your detox period. You will want to shampoo as normal and then apply the apple cider vinegar hair rinse.  You want to leave it on the hair for at least a few minutes before rinsing out.  You can also leave it in your hair overnight!  If you leave it in, it will help prevent tangles.  Since it restores your scalp's pH level, it will also help and prevent an itchy scalp.

Apple Cider Vinegar Hair Rinse Recipe

  • 1/4 cup to 1 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 2 cups water
* If your hair is dry, use less apple cider vinegar.  If your hair is more on the oily side, use more apple cider vinegar.* Want to know more about the benefits of an apple cider vinegar hair rinse and some more recipes?  Check out this great educational article!

How to Brush Your Hair with a Boar Bristle Brush

In our last blog we talked about the boar bristle brush benefits, but now it is time to discuss how to brush your hair with a boar bristle brush.boar bristle brush, brushing

First a few tips to start out...

  • Be sure to only brush dry hair.  Wet hair is too vulnerable and is prone to breakage.
  • Be sure to gently detangle before brushing with a boar bristle brush.
  • It is still beneficial to brush curly hair, just be sure to detangle beforehand and brush very gently.

How to Brush Your Hair with a Boar Bristle Brush

yDD24Z[1]Stand straight, then bend over from the waist as far as possible allowing blood to flow freely to your scalp.  Firmly grasp the handle.  Start at the nape of the neck, then move to the sides, and lastly to the crown all the way to your front facial hairline.  Brush in slow, gentle strokes for 3-5 minutes. Straighten up slowly.  Your brush will now be filled with sebaceous oil.  Repeat the above procedure standing upright.  The sebum collected on the brush from the first step will be redistributed throughout the rest of your hair. Now that we've talked about how to brush your hair, lets talk about when to brush your hair.

When to Brush

To get maximum benefits we recommend brushing three times a day: morning, late afternoon, and before bed.  If your hair is curly, you won't need to brush this often because it how to brushcan end up relaxing your curls.  We recommend brushing before your showers if you have curly hair.  Sebum will improve your curls strength and shine. Brushing your hair nightly before bed is especially important.  By coating your hair with additional sebum, you set in motion new, healthy growth while you experience the renewal of sound sleep.

How to Clean a Boar Bristle Brush

I would recommend cleaning your boar bristle brush weekly.  You will get lots of build up of toxins, oils, and dirt.  Here is the best way to clean your boar bristle brush:
  • Remove the hair with a wide toothed comb, carefully so you don't pull out any bristles
  • Gently cleanse with MM shampoo (or water), using a cloth to wipe
  • Rinse only.  Do not submerge brush.
  • Squeeze excess water that may have gotten trapped in the rubber cushion
  • Lay your brush on a towel with the bristles facing down to dry

5 Tips to Detox Your Hair for Incredible Volume and Shine

Lauren empowered sustenanceThis post is brought to you by Lauren of Empowered Sustenance. Check out her amazing blog for more healthy living tips, recipes and products.

Detox. It's a noun, it's a verb, it's a fad word, it's a vital piece of health. In my journey toward a holistic lifestyle, I've incorporated numerous detox rituals such as dry brushing and even detoxing my kitchen of toxic cooking materials. Another area in my life where I emphasize detox is my scalp. When I first switched to Morocco Method I was introduced to the Detox Period. My scalp rebelled with increased oil production and a slightly sticky texture as my scalp began to balance. natural hair detox clayI reached for Zen Detox, a mineral clay designed to draw impurities from the scalp. The results left me stunned! My scalp was deeply purified and my roots had more volume than I've ever experienced. Zen Detox is a unique blend of volcanic ash, plant proteins and minerals that mix with water and apply to your scalp. It's like a mud mask for the scalp – as it dries it draws out impurities, and balances the pH of the scalp. Here are my 5 tips for using this unique product:
  1. The first time you try it, don't use it before an important outing. The product works effectively to loosen "gunk" from your hair. The first time I used it, it looked like dandruff but was just dry skin that had been cleared from my scalp. It's an extremely deep and rejuvenating scalp detox. After the second time using the product, I not longer experienced this purging.
  2. Zen Detox provides fabulous volume - I love how extra voluminous my hair is the few days after I use it.
  3. I greatly prefer Zen Detox over plain bentonite clay for a hair detox. I find bentonite clay dries out my hair too much, while Zen Detox leaves it soft and vibrant.
  4. I highly recommend doing the final rinse of Zen Detox with cool water. It makes a huge difference in the shine and softness of my hair post-detox.
  5. For maintenance, use Zen Detox once a month. For deep detox and speeding up the detox period, use it once to 4 times per week for a few weeks. (One container has 3-4 uses).
Here also are some amazing multi-uses for Zen Detox. Did you know that it can be used as an acne spot treatment and pore-refining facial masque? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fl_5gfr5ZY

What is Biodynamic Farming? Better than Organic

 What is Biodynamic Farming?

Biodynamic farmers strive to create a diversified, balanced farm ecosystem that generates health and fertility as much as possible from within the farm itself. Preparations made from fermented manure, minerals and herbs are used to help restore and harmonize the vital life forces of the farm and to enhance the nutrition, quality and flavor of the food being raised. Biodynamic practitioners also recognize and strive to work in cooperation with the subtle influences of the wider cosmos on soil, plant, and animal health. - "What is Biodynamics?" Biodynamic Association
Based off the work of Rudolf Steiner, this method of agriculture takes a step further than organic farming. It treats the farm as a living entity with multiple working parts and a myriad of influences that effect it as a whole.

Biodynamic Certification

The Demeter Association, Inc. is the biodynamic certifying entity in the United States. When a farm is approved as biodynamic, it is also certified organic through Stellar Certification Services. In order to be considered, a farm needs to meet a complex but rewarding standard. Here are some of the guidelines:
  • Must preserve local biodiversity
  • No monoculture, must have crop rotation
  • Soil must have biodynamic preparations (which have been sourced from the farm or local region)
  • Irrigation must emphasize water conservation
  • Encouraged to integrate livestock into farming techniques
  • Use self-sustaining fertility dynamics (recycling livestock manure, using crop rotation to not deplete nutrients)
  • Absolutely no use of GMO-derived seeds, inoculants, or livestock feed

Jrjohnson Biodynamic Farms

Jrjohnson Biodynamic farmsRalph Johnson of Jrjohnson Biodynamic Farms is a San Luis Obispo farmer who has been "planting by the moon" for more than thirty years. He sells his biodynamically-sourced plants, seeds, and produce at farmer's markets all over the county. He also co-hosts the Biodynamic Gardening Report, a local podcast and radio segment that gives the Central Coast weekly updates about how to bring biodynamic practices into their own gardens. Here is a sample of the Biodynamic Gardening Report: We caught up with Ralph at SLO Farmer's Market with Lauren Geertsen and asked him what biodynamic farming was! He is currently going through Demeter Biodynamic Certification.

Five Elements of Satifaction

Air, Water, Fire, Earth, and Ether. Every element has physical mental and emotional Characteristics. Why not start from the top down? The Crown Chackra or energy center associated with unity, prayer, and channeling is located at the top of the head. Our hair is literally a receiver for subtle vibrations present at all times in the universe. Samson in the bible, the native american psy-recon unit in the military, rishi knots of yogis, power objects of shamans, and ritual head covers of cultures all over the world refer us to the far reaching meaning and power connected to the hair. Babaji, an ancient yogi and avatar gave certain practices revered by followers. Among water and fire purification is the cutting of the hair. If hair is a lens for interpreting subtle vibrations, cutting it would imply receptivity, or a fresh start. Did you know there are certain dates that create varied results for this type of practice? When a powerful positive practice such as yoga, meditation, or devotional service is consistently applied, the hair grown during this time is especially sacred, potent, and useful. A physical, emotional, and psychological momentum is established by hair for better or worse. Certain types of products are very beneficial such as the categories of fair-trade, vegan, gluten free, organic, non-GMO, prayer based, and alchemy effected. These aspects positively influence all three from a physical standpoint. Combined with meditation, deep relaxation and physical fitness, these products become exponentially more effective. Deep Receptivity helps one to access ether. This element is enhanced by pearl suplementation, Ylang ylang, rose essential oils, and yoga nidra (yogic aware sleep). Fire is increased by vigorous activity, mental or physical. Sprints of intensity. Earths is more endurance based. A steady focus, balance pose or fact based perspective. Air is related to thought, diverse creative thinking, or interpretive dance. Water is the healing element, learning, relaxing, fluid perspective. The virtues of health don't live in one element alone, yet a balance between them. Too much fire could be aggression, dehydration, split ends, or burnout . Too much water could be resentful, passive aggressive, or flat hair. Too much ether could be very spacey and disconnected, losing hair. Too much earth could be stubborn, oily, thick, and tangled. To balance these elements, a great place to start would be self observation. What qualities of the balanced and unbalanced elements relate to you? Practice the corrective modalities as appropriate, and focus on the corresponding products your chosen elemental focus.

How to Transition to Morrocco Method Shampoos as a First Time User

Okay, to be honest...

Transitioning to natural shampoos and conditioners can be a difficult and lengthy process. From dealing with detox to experimenting with your washing routine, it can take a while to figure out what's best for your hair. That's not to say it's not worth it. I think once you try out this method you will be so happy with the results that you'll never look back. Not only will you save tons of shampoo but your hair will be renewed and revitalized to new heights!

What to expect as a first time user:

detox hair natural shampooYour first attempts using sulfate free shampoo may have left you confused by the lack of suds. MM shampoo's also have a very thick texture, making them difficult to disperse throughout all parts of your hair. To remedy this, make sure you properly dilute the shampoos using a spare bottle and adding equal parts water and shampoo. Using conventional shampoo will allow your hair to dry super fast and can give you amazing short-term results. Don't be fooled! This is because of synthetic ingredients, such as parabens, that coat the hair in plastic while leaving the real damage hidden beneath. So, even though these shampoos work easier into your scalp, your hair pays the price in the long run. In contrast, Morocco Method shampoos are crafted using healthy plants, clays, minerals and essential oils, the same ingredients used by the Gods & Goddesses  before the time of bottled shampoos. Anthony Morocco has re-invented this sense of ritual, this sense of natural power, allowing us to experience it every time we wash our hair.

Here are some practical insights for getting the most out of your natural shampoos:

1. Forget everything you know about brushing.

Proper brushing using a boar bristle brush can alleviate detox symptoms along with many other benefits. Also use the scalp massager to invigorate the blood flow and evenly distribute oils to the tips of the hair.  If you don't do this the ends of your hair will remain frizzy and split ends will occur more often. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmNVWpP01KQ

2. Use a netti pot!

This method really made the difference for me. Here's what you do: add about 1 tablespoon of your favorite MM shampoo in the base of the netti pot. Next, add in equal amounts water or slightly more depending on your perfect ratio. Now swirl the pot while holding the hole shot at the end of the spout until well mixed. netti potHere's the incredible part: simply use the spout of the netti pot to disperse your shampoo next time you wash. This will help distribute the shampoo mixture all over the head, not clumped in one area of your head. Be sure to shampoo twice. The first wash removes dirt and debris; the second nourishes the scalp and hair shaft as the raw oils and minerals penetrate the follicles. In a pinch, you can also use a 16 ounce glass mason jar. I did this once on a trip. It worked well, but not as well as a netti pot!

3. Do the same for conditioners

If you're finding that your hair is still oily, do the above method with your conditioners as well. Simply swirl the conditioner with some water in your netti pot  and use the spout to distribute it over your hair.

4. Get yourself a bottle of Raw Fermented Organic Apple Cider Vinegar.

apple cider vinegar rinseTake 2 tablespoons and put in the bottom of the netti pot. Fill the rest with clean water and distribute over the scalp. This keeps the pH of the scalp in check and inhibits scalp irritations or hair loss. It will give your hair that shine you miss from your conventional shampoo, restore the scalp and leave your hair thicker and fuller. Leave this in as your final rinse! *BONUS TIP* If my hair starts to feel dry, I like to use the spray-in conditioner all over. It brings a magical quality to your hair.   Lots of love and blessings to your healthiest head of hair! - Dodhisattva

8 Boar Bristle Brush Benefits

The boar bristle brush is not a new invention.  Boar hair has been used as bristles for brushes and even toothbrushes for hundreds of years, but why?  Boar hair is almost identical to human hair in texture and this produces many benefits for your hair and scalp.  I am going to highlight some of the many boar bristle brush benefits.Boar Bristle Brush Benefits

Boar Bristle Brush Benefits

1. Grows  hair faster and prevents hair loss The boar bristle brush gently massages the scalp, increasing blood flow and unclogging the hair follicles.  One of the factors in hair growth is blood flow to the hair follicles.  Without blood flow, your hair cannot grow.  This can often be a cause of hair loss and slow growing hair. 2. Conditions hair A lovely boar bristle brush benefit is the fact that it naturally conditions your hair.  It will distribute your scalp's sebaceous oils throughout the rest of your hair.  This allows the oil to coat your whole strand of hair, rather than just having it sit on your scalp.  It's nature's best conditioner! 3. Adds shine Since the boar bristle brush Shiny Hairevenly distributes your scalps oils throughout the rest of your hair, it creates a natural shine to your hair.  I used to use chemically-laden shine sprays daily and I thought switching to natural products would mean no more shine.  I was wrong!  The boar bristle brush gives me better shine than I ever got with shine spray AND it's natural. 4. Cleans hair Brushing with a boar bristle brush will take the oil that is otherwise weighing down your roots and making them look greasy, and distribute them throughout your hair.  This will take away the oiliness at the roots.  It will also remove excess oils on the hair by trapping them in the brush.  The brush also helps to catch fuzz, dirt, and waste material build-up on the hair and scalp like a magnet. 5. Prevents hair breakage and frizz Your scalps sebaceous oil acts as a natural protectant for your hair.  It will help to seal in split ends, prevent hair breakage, and reduce frizz.  It is better than any anti-frizz serum that you can find on the market today.  It will also allow your hair to have more elasticity which will reduce breakage. Hair with Volume6. It's a great styling tool One of the best boar bristle brush benefits is that it works as a great styling tool for a couple of reasons.  If you stand straight and flip your hair over, brush from the nape of your neck forward, it will leave your hair with amazing volume!  On the flip side, if you brush your hair regularly your scalps oils coating your hair will help to naturally straighten your hair, no heat required! 7. Balances your scalps oil production One of the little known boar bristle brush benefits is that it will help to balance out your scalps oil production.  If your scalp is underproducing oils, it will help to stimulate the oil glands to start producing more oil.  It will also allow your oil glands to breathe. 8. Softer hair Since your hair strands are being coated in your scalp's sebaceous oils, your hair will become softer!  This is one of my favorite boar bristle brush benefits.  The oils naturally condition your hair, leaving your hair shiny and super soft! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QitYR8PmKgU To learn how to properly brush with a boar bristle brush, check out this article.

Morning Cleansing Tonic for Springtime

This post is brought to you by Sarah Kruse, Ayurvedic Practitioner, LMP, of www.embrace-ayurveda.com

Springtime is the ideal time to release excesses toxins and restore your essences. As the melting snow and rain are flowing from the mountains toward the sea, our bodies naturally want to release toxins that block our bodies' energies.  We do this through pre-purification methods that nourish and prepare the body to let go of accumulated toxins, followed by the purification methods themselves. 5 Elements Hair Care,  the science of life and longevity, teaches that we are a microcosm of the greater macrocosm. As our environment and foods become more polluted, we become vulnerable to the effects of these toxins. One way we can cleanse and protect ourselves is with the Spring Tonic.  This cleansing and rejuvenation formula helps detox the body and restore balance and vitality throughout the year. Through proper detoxing methods, we can return to our true Selves, that is our wise, awake, inspired and sensual Self. Remember to always step out of your busy life and take time to truly nourish.

Morning Cleansing Tonic for Springtime

This is a drink I often suggest to clients as a morning cleanser and refresher. Many people find that they don't require coffee after this to get their bowels moving! In blender or juicer, combine: 1 peeled orange or grapefruit orange recipe 1 peeled lemon or lime lemon recipe 2 inches fresh ginger root ginger recipe 2 inches fresh turmeric root tumeric recipe 1 cup water water recipe If you're using a juicer, go ahead and juice everything into a glass jar and put aside, to be stored in fridge. If using a blender, go ahead and blend everything well and strain into glass jar to be stored in fridge. blend recipe strain recipe   store recipe This is enough for a 3-day supply. I recommend making it fresh approximately every 3 days. Upon waking up, after completing your morning rituals, heat 1 cup water. Stir in 1 Tbsp raw honey, 1 pinch sea salt and ½ cup of above juice mixture. Drink and enjoy! Excellent for Kapha balancing and ama (toxin) reducing. This combination is slightly heating so it may not be appropriate for Pitta individuals every morning. Vata can enjoy regularly. Follow up an hour or so later with your favorite morning tea and breakfast. * Other benefits include: cleansing for the intestines and lymphatic system, weight reducing, anti-inflammatory, electrolyte balancing, rich in vitamin C.
